Abstract
Turbine discs for airplane jet-engines are usually heat treated and subsequently air cooled or quenched in liquid coolants. This process should be performed within a minimum and a maximum cooling rate in order to achieve the microstructure which is required for the specific mechanical properties. Therefore, the aim of the diploma thesis is analysing the cooling and quenching process as well as deriving simulation input parameters for determining the particular phases of heat transfer. This enables reducing the number of field tests and establishes a time- and cost-saving methodology for characterisation of the heat transfer. Time-temperature-measurements at the forged Ti 6-2-4-2- and IN718-discs are performed in industrial field tests at positions with high, medium and low cooling rates. Additionally to the field tests and simulations, laboratory-based experiments with Ti 6-2-4-2-samples are accomplished to clarify additional influences of bath temperature, concentration and liquid flow on the quenching process in polymer quenching media. Consequently, the microstructure of the sample is analysed.
