Abstract

The starting point for this diploma thesis was anorganically contaminated waste water originated from the manufactoring plants of Wacker-Chemie at Burghausen, Germany. The sewage is drained by the use of a chamber filter press. The remaining filter cake is dumped at a special-waste landfill within the area of the plant.
For cost reasons Wacker-Chemie is looking for a way to deposit the filter cake at the salt mines of Stetten. The problem is that the filter cake occasionally tends to produce inflammable gases.
The aim of the diploma thesis was the investigation of the way, the extend and the parameters of the rate of gas production. The components of the sewage sludge are essentially carbonate in solved and unsolved form and silicid acid. Sometimes iron, aluminium, ferric chlorides, heavy metals and silicium.
Since the compound of the sludge is varying it was possible to detect that mainly silicon is responsible for gas production and that hydrogen is the only gas emanating. There were, however, no definite connections to the parameters, say the pH-factor, detectable. Moreover it was found out that the gas production tends to stop at an early, incomplete level.
Finally it can be said that the filter cake is no apprpriate filling material and the results of the experiments show that the filter cake cannot be processed into an appropriate filling material.
