Abstract

The application of high strength steel is essential for the automotive industry. Besides the decrease of fuel consumption, the safety of occupants is determining for the current research in this field. The aim of the third generation of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) is to improve the ductility of high strength steels containing a microstructure of martensite or bainite and retained austenite. This master thesis examined the viability of quenching and partitioning (Q&P) heat treatments on a continuous annealing facility (HyCAL), which uses hydrogen gas for quenching. Therefore, two typical AHSS alloys were heat treated on a simulator. The material was mechanical characterised and the retained austenite fraction was measured via X-ray diffraction. Results from tensile testing showed that both alloys achieved high elongations in combination with high strengths. The achieved mechanical properties show that the HyCAL facility is suitable for Q&P heat treatments.
