Abstract

The combination of a Laser Ultrasound System (LUS) and the Gleeble® 3800 thermomechanical forming simulator, represents a novel in-situ materials testing technology. The non-contact ultrasonic measurement system can detect changes in the microstructure during thermal and thermomechanical treatments and thus make a valuable contribution to the determination of specific material parameters. At the Chair of Forming Technology such a system shall be used for the optimized determination of material parameters, which are necessary for the implementation in microstructure models. Within the scope of this work, a concept for the implementation of a LUS to the Gleeble® 3800 available at the Chair of Forming Technology is to be developed. This includes the effective design of an encasement for the optical and electronic components of the detection system. Furthermore, an optimized attachment of the excitation laser to the glass front of the sample chamber shall be developed, which simplifies the sample change while not affecting the precision of the laser beam. In addition, the existing sample insertion system of the Gleeble® 3800 is to be extended for a cuboid geometry of the sample, so that an angularly accurate positioning between the plungers is ensured.
