Abstract
OMV is planning a plant to produce crude oil from recycled plastic material. As space on the refinery site is very limited, the material is to be transported to an unloading station outside the refinery by lorry or rail. For the onward transport to this plant, suitable conveyor systems, recycling materials and delivery positions are compared with each other both economically and environmentally as part of this work. Three plastic materials were analysed: POS flakes, POS pellets and square bales. In addition, 6 delivery positions around the refinery were considered, as well as delivery by lorry and by rail. In order to compare the scenarios, the routes were planned, conveyor systems were evaluated, offers from different manufacturers for a standard route were obtained and these were scaled to the different conveyor routes with the help of a belt conveyor calculation. Scaling is carried out by calculating an open belt conveyor for each conveyor section and the required capacity. This allows conversion factors to be created for the standard section. These conversion factors are used to convert the performance of the manufacturer's quotations to the different conveyor sections and can therefore be included in the cost calculation. Finally, a cost breakdown was drawn up in order to compare the different scenarios and make a recommendation. The realisation behind the choice of plastic material is that wrapped square bales generate the lowest costs in terms of production and delivery. Wrapping the bales also minimises the risk of environmental pollution. The ropeway is very well suited as a means of transport as, in combination with the containers, it enables the bales to be opened directly in front of the system and thus benefit from the high bulk density of the bales. The disadvantage of the ropeway is the straight route and the fact that it must not cross inhabited areas. A major advantage is the low storage costs, as bales can be stored directly in the containers. Due to the closed containers, this system benefits greatly in terms of pollution of the environment with plastic material. With regard to delivery, it can be stated that delivery by rail is preferable. This is due to the future requirements, which are intended to reduce the transport of waste by lorry in particular, and the fact that suitable rail facilities are available on site. For the reasons mentioned above, the recommendation for this work is to deliver square bales of film in containers by rail to the Borealis siding. These containers are transported to the plant by cable car. If the delivery is made by lorry, the delivery position in Hainburgerstraße also makes sense. Square bales in containers can also be transported from there to the plant by cable car.
