Abstract

Directly reduced iron is the reduction of iron ore without entering the molten phase. Directly reduced iron occurs in the form of pellets, briquettes or lumps. Directly reduced iron is susceptible to reoxidation, promoted through fine material generation. In this master thesis, the amount of fine material produced when loading a specially designed railway wagon for transporting DRI pellets was investigated. To investigate the generation of fine material, DE simulations were carried out using the software ThreeParticle/CAE from Becker 3D GmbH. Numerous drop tests with individual particles as well as with bulk samples were used to configurate the simulation. The results of the tests were used to parameterize a breakage model for the DEM. By lowering the height and cushioning the contact partners, fine material generation and particle breakage could be reduced. Friction tests between DRI pellets and a Hardox 400 steel plate provided two of the required parameters for the simulations. The results of this work will be used in further design of wagons for the transport of DRI pellets.
