Abstract

Additive Manufacturing (AM) of metal powders is a novel technique that offers comprehensive freedom in design regarding part geometry. In recent years, AM evolved from rapid prototyping to a production technique for a wide range of applications, such as medical, tooling, aerospace or automotive. In this master thesis, the manufacturability of a low alloyed steel powder with Laser Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing was investigated. The characterization covered the analysis of the powder feedstock, the finding of process parameters and the mechanical testing of AM-samples with subsequent evaluation of the case hardenability. Systematic variations of process parameters enabled manufacturing of samples with promising mechanical properties that create a good basis for further optimizations. The case-hardenable steel grade 16MnCr5 was chosen as a reference material.
