In a volatile environment, which pharmaceutical companies are currently facing, an optimized inventory management system may turn out to be an essential competitive advantage. Methods concerning inventory management exist throughout literature and practice in various characteristics. Aim of this thesis is to identify the correlation of classical analytical methods concerning inventory management and data mining methods. Common definitions and characteristics in order to provide a basis for the investigation of interactions as well as for the practical approach are subject at the beginning of this thesis. Besides the analysis of the opportunities for analysing inventories, prevailing developments concerning the future formation of inventories and the emergence of new pharmaceutical archetypes are introduced. Finally, a practical proof of the findings from literature is performed on data of Fresenius Kabi Austria GmbH and recommendations for actions are given.
