Abstract

In the quarries of Jura-Cement-Fabriken Triassic limestone and marl is mined by blasting operations. The detonation of the explosives induces seismic waves, which are perceived as vibrations by the residents. The aim of the research study is to reduce those emissions by optimizing the blasting operations, in order to keep the negative effects on residents and environment as low as possible. Due to measurements of ground vibrations at several locations nearby the detonation, some areas show higher amplitudes in the maximum peak velocity. The crucial factor is the influence of the underground setting on the vibration characteristics. Thus, the higher amplitudes are related to the transmission of the seismic wave from bedrock to unconsolidated rock. Thus, several blasting tests were performed to analyse the relationship between the input parameters of the blasting engineering and the resulting emissions. Based on the analysis of those emissions, the optimization potential was evaluated. According to the analysis of the seismograms, based on the Swiss standard, the simplification of the complex oscillation of the blasting operations is seen controversial in the context of the maximum peak velocity and frequency.
