Abstract

Digitalization is advancing steadily and the use of IT systems to support and improve business processes has become indispensable. Due to the developments in the field of IT systems, even small companies can and must nowadays take the use of such systems into consideration, to be able to meet the constantly increasing requirements for efficiency and transparency. In particular, the areas of warehouse and inventory management are often sources of inefficiency and show a lack of transparency, especially in small companies, due to missing structure. The use of a warehouse management system allows companies to get a better overview of inventory and stock movements. Not only can processes be made more efficient and transparent, but also cost savings can be realized by minimizing inventory levels. However, the introduction of such a system, especially for companies with little project experience, poses great challenges in terms of approach and project schedule. Under this aspect it is the aim of this master’s thesis to carry out the selection and evaluation processes for the introduction of a warehouse management system using the example of Foood's Safron OG and finally to give a recommendation for a suitable system. In order to achieve this goal, the functions and the necessity of warehouses and stock keeping are pointed out at the beginning before the development and the basic features of modern warehouse management systems are discussed. This is followed by a general explanation of the procedure for selecting and implementing a warehouse management system and the presentation of chosen evaluation and comparison methods as well as their processes. Subsequently, the theoretically acquired knowledge is applied in practice at the partner company, the selection and evaluation process is carried out and a final recommendation is made. For this purpose, the current and target situations are determined, based on which a catalog of requirements is derived and the possible alternatives are evaluated on the basis of these requirements. It becomes clear that the given requirements can be met by several providers and that it is important to consider the possible future development of the company when selecting IT systems. Additionally, it shows that such an analysis, especially for fast-growing companies in a dynamic environment, is only a snapshot whose validity must always be questioned.
