Abstract

Polymaterials AG (Kaufbeuren, Germany) in collaboration with Engel GmbH (Schwertberg, Austria) developed a system for the accelerated development of compounds on a two-component-all-electric injection moulding machine in an integrated system based on the methods of HTS. The complete HTS- system consists of a so called PDWB (Product Design Workbench)-software used for experimental design and data analysis and of the components metering, distributive mixing, injection moulding, and testing. Main component of the system is an all-electric two component injection moulding machine. The aim of this thesis was to adapt the HTS-system to an injection moulding machine and check the practicability of the system. In order to further develop the machine concept, especially the ability of mixing both melt streams of both plastification units during the whole injection cycle was investigated. Test specimens were produced via co-injection of pure and filler containing polymer melt. The produced specimens and free injected strands were analyzed for their content of the filler material, which was iron powder. It was found that the filler level increased with the flow distance. The average value did not reach the nominal value. To get an improvement, these experiments were made with changed injection conditions. Subsequently, glass bead powder was used as filler material to avoid magnetic effects and anisotropic behavior of the filler. These experiments did not show the desired improvement so the next step was to modify and equip the co-injection head with pressure sensors, bolt shut-off nozzles and a throttle. With the new head again specimens with iron powder were produced and analyzed. Then strands with the same materials in different coloration using a nozzle with the same outflow-diameter as the inner diameter of the static mixer were produced. Afterwards the cross-sections of the strands along the length were analyzed by using image measurement software. As part of this series of experiments it has been tried to inject several shots with one dosage to achieve an even distribution of the iron powder over the flow distance. The experiments showed a significantly more homogeneous distribution for subsequent shots. The practicability of the system was verified through processing and documentation of various client projects, which were realized by serving the metering system to one plastification unit, but the variance of the measured material properties is much higher compared with a twin screw compounder.
