Abstract

Since in Europe no natural deposits of sodium-bentonite which can be industrially utilized exist, but there are sufficient deposits of calcium-bentonite, the scientific basis for processing technologies was/were sought which would allow the production of products of equal quality from the latter. The raw material for this work, a bentonite from Sardinia from the deposit “Serra Narbonis” was selected for economic-technical reasons. The processing encompasses steps from the raw material calcium-bentonite to the end product which is either in paste or powder form. Starting from the identical reaction mechanisms of the conversion of the calcium bentonite into an organo-modified bentonite, two variations were developed which differ importantly in the technology. These are the “Demi-Dry” process and the “Suspension-process”, which can also be combined. The proof that this was a complete transformation, from the process-technological standpoint, was brought by thermo-gravimetric measurements. By selecting the most appropriate process in each case, the potential manufacturer of fillers can fit the best method for incorporating the activated filler into the polymer. The two processes can be used for all calcium-bentonites which are considered morphologically suitable and all reagents known to be utilized for making organophile bentonite derivatives can be used. In this way it is possible to exactly fit the products to the polymer and its area of use. The active function of the organophile bentonite derivative for use in polymer composites is guaranteed by the aspect-ratio of the Montmorillonite lamellae and the compatibility with a wide variety of polymers. The aspect ratio of the thin Montmorillonite layer packages and/or single lamella was determined using SEM/ESEM/NanoSEM and TEM imaging.
