Abstract

Annual consumption of prime plastics is app. 46 millions metric tons, which represents app. 20% of the global consumption. Recovery rates for plastics are weak with a range between 10‘% and 30% with an average of 14%. An increase of these recovery rates makes sense in both, from an economical but also ecological point of view. This thesis investigates in various possibilities fort he recovery of some special polymers out of the complex WEEE waste stream. WEEE has been chosen due to two major facts, on the one hand because of already well established collection and recycling paths with still growing numbers in WEEE, and because of an acceptable percentage of plastics within WEEE on the other hand. Comparison of technologies for the recovery of plastics leads to the fact, that NIR sorting technology meets the specific requirements at its best. Experimental results indicate, that it is possible to successfully sort out Polycarbonate and also Nylon grades from the complex WEEE stream with restrictions regarding particle size and surface impurities. Mechanical properties show acceptable values, but are generally too far off from virgin grades. Nevertheless, the usage of additives e.g. impact modifiers during compounding can improve properties significantly even with low dosage rates. Chemical analysis done on both, Polycarbonate and Nylon approved the conformity to the european REACH and RoHS legal regulations. Nylon grades seem to be close to the very narrow specified limit for Cadmium but with this can be solved by using color sorting.
