Abstract
The digitization and automation of processes now transform more and more into state-of-the-art in most sectors of industry. As a result of this and the further development of information technology, significant increases in efficiency and productivity have been achieved in recent years and decades. The construction industry follows this path by developing the methods of building information modeling. Building construction plays a certain pioneering role here. But also in the field of underground construction, there are currently enormous efforts to bring this technology to a broad application. The special framework conditions of subsurface construction represent the greatest challenges. This work explains the current state of development of the methods of building information modeling in general and in conventional tunnel construction. The engineering geological documentation during the execution phase of a tunnel structure and the software already available for this are thoroughly covered. Together with the formulation of requirements for future developments, an interface is created between the fields of information technology and geotechnics, which makes it possible to accelerate developments in this field.
