Abstract
Rockfall repeatedly causes work accidents and damage to machinery and infrastructure at open pit mines. For the evaluation of the risks of rockfall incidents, based on fall-trajectories, different rockfall simulation programs are available. By using the programs RAMMS and RocFall, rockfall events are simulated along a selected slope system in an open pit mine. Therefore, a realistic modelling of the slopes is required. The two simulation programs are presented and the input of the slope geometries and the necessary parameters are explained. The differences between the two programs are discussed in more detail. RocFall only enables a two-dimensional assessment of slopes, which makes it necessary to implement the terrain as vertical profiles into the simulation. On the contrary, RAMMS offers a three dimensional approach for the modelling of the terrains. To define hazardous areas, the jump heights and maximum runout distances have to be determined. The aim of this thesis is to develop proposals, based on the simulation results, for the enlargement of a protection zone with a ban on access. For the assessment of the input parameters and the verification of the simulation outputs, the results are compared to rockfall tests with 35 different sized blocks. Therefore, the rockfall test results were documented and evaluated in advance.
