Abstract

Global trends such as lower production depths, wider product variety or small batch sizes pose major challenges for the production and logistics systems of companies in all sectors. To maintain competitiveness, it is not only necessary to constantly review existing structures but also to rethink the choice of suitable intralogistics systems and processes. One example is the usage of manually handled transport processes, which in the medium term often no longer meet the requirements for flexibility, costs, efficiency, transparency, standardisation and scalability, but are also no longer sustainable due to the increasing shortage of personnel as a result of demographic developments. Especially in the case of monotonous work tasks with a high degree of reproducibility and performance, investments in automation often represent a solution that can be implemented quickly. The use of automated guided vehicles is becoming increasingly important for the handling of transport processes in intralogistics due to the rapid technological progress in navigation, control and battery technology as well as falling investment costs. The aim of this thesis is to compare automated and manual industrial trucks with a high handling capacity for the purpose of horizontal pallet transport in heterogeneous transport environments. For this purpose, different characteristics of automated transport systems in intralogistics are identified based on literature, manufacturers¿ specifications and a test trial in a large-scale distribution centre and, based on this, a possible methodology for conducting a simulation study is presented. Based on the results of the simulation experiments, key planning variables of the two transport systems are derived and the influence of mixed traffic is analysed. Finally, the systems are compared with each other, methods of monetary evaluation are presented and an outlook on further potentials using autonomous mobile robots is offered.
