title = "Sand screens for controlling sand production from hydrocarbon wells: A mini-review",
abstract = "Worldwide seventy percent of the oil and gas production wells face hindrances owing to unpredictable production of sand. Predominantly, sand production along with the hydrocarbons is one of the main issues for the production wells. It tends to increase the separation cost and decrease the production rate of the hydrocarbons as it blocks the production perforation. There are four major types of sand control: one uses artificial cement to complete the well and the other uses filters in the downhole to prevent sand. Performance-wise chemical method is the most efficient but it is only applicable when the injection pressure is low. This paper presents a detailed study of the different types of sand screens with their sand-controlling efficiency and selection criteria as per the varying types of reservoir conditions. This paper also discussed the recent advancement in the development of innovative sand screens. The selection criteria for the sand screen is comprised of four stages which are also mentioned in detail. Furthermore, there are experimental studies that are used for the selection of sand screens according to the requirement and the selected screen performance is determined using two factors namely; screen plugging and particle size distribution (PSD). The study aims to comprehensively analyze the various sand screens currently available in the market. This analysis will aid in selecting the most suitable screen for a particular formation and the quantity of sand being produced.",
