Abstract

Against the background of EU climate protection targets, the reduction of CO2 emissions in companies is becoming increasingly important. To achieve these goals, companies are striving to redesign their processes in the direction of sustainability. Particularly in the transport sector, which accounts for a significant proportion of CO2 emissions, it makes sense to take a closer look at transport processes. Trucks in particular, as the most frequently used means of transport, contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. One promising way to reduce emissions is to shift road transport to more environmentally friendly alternatives such as rail or inland waterways. This particular approach, where trucks are only used for transport between the terminal or port and the company, is called intermodal transport. The objective of this work is to identify innovative routes for intermodal transport in the supplier network of a manufacturing company. This process is made possible through the use of a powerful visualization tool that can display routes in a visually appealing manner. Identifying the most efficient routes starts with dividing the geographic area into different clusters, assigning a potentially suitable CT terminal to each cluster. To ensure that this framework is as meaningful as possible, extensive research was conducted on existing infrastructure and freight traffic conditions. A major focus of this work is the calculation of CO2 emissions for both road and combined transport. Through this comparison, it is possible to show the environmental impact and benefits of combined transport compared to conventional road transport. By combining visualization techniques, route planning and the evaluation of CO2 emissions and costs, valuable insights for the optimization of combined transport in the supply network of the manufacturing company will be gained.
