The company KAMIG Österreichische Kaolin- und Montanindustrie Aktiengesellschaft Nfg. Komm. Ges., based in Aisthofen (Perg district/Upper Austria) is a manufacturer of kaolin-based fillers, quartz sands and clays. As the primary deposit of KAMIG will be exhausted in a few years after about two centuries of documented active mining, the aim of the project, on which this thesis is based, is to examine the processability of new raw material sources of primary and secondary origin and by that creating an economic foundation for KAMIG in the coming decades. The technical investigations on various kaolin-containing raw material samples already carried out in the course of preliminary work were continued in the present master thesis and extended, especially the characterisation of the present mineralogy in the raw material samples. Investigations on possible process concepts for the production of marketable products and their evaluation and comparison were also deepened in the course of this thesis. Starting with a detailed literature, patent and market research in order to determine the best state of art in certain aspects of kaolin processing. During the mineralogical investigations, the main focus was set to the analysis of the mineralogy as well as on intergrowth conditions, which were determined not only by the use of fractional analysis but also with MLA. A further focus was placed on the accompanying minerals contained in the raw kaolin and the evaluation of possibilities for their economic utilisation, on the one hand for extending the existing product range, on the other hand for the most efficient use of the deposit contents according to the zero-waste idea. Investigations into the processing and refinement of kaolin concentrates to even higher quality kaolin products rounded off the investigations, whereby the processes "magnetic separation" and "chemical bleaching" proved to be particularly promising. The investigations were carried out in the laboratories of the Chair of Mineral Processing and the Chair of Geology and Economic Geology of Montanuniversitaet Leoben, in the laboratory and current processing plant of KAMIG, as well as at external research institutions and at machine and plant manufacturers.
