Abstract
Currently, the state of the art practice to granulate molten blast furnace slag is by wet granulation plants, which have the disadvantage of wasting significant amounts of energy due to the use of cooling water. In future that wasted energy needs to be exploited. The only appropriate method for utilizing the thermal energy content of the blast furnace slag, appears to be dry slag granulation. Besides heat recovery, another focus is to produce glassy slag granulates that can meet the requirements of the cement industry. International tests have proven that a dry slag granulation process can fulfill these demands. The Insitute of Thermal Process Technologies at the University of Leoben is able to melt the required amount of slag in its existing Flash-Reactor. Together with Siemens VAI, voestalpine Stahl GmbH, ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe and the Forschungsgemeinschaft für Eisenhüttenschlacke a pilot plant should be planned and constructed to get basic data for projecting an up-scale plant with integrated heat recovery. Due to the fact, that dry slag granulation with integrated heat recovery is a completely new process, the first part of this thesis comprises information about the fundamentals of ironmaking and blast furnace slag. The second part deals with I & C technologies of the pilot plant.
