Abstract

The iron and steel industry in the whole world has been engaged since 1990 to find different, more environmentally friendly methods to produce crude steel. Beside the diverse fluidised bed reactors, there is also the ¿Hydrogen Plasma Smelting Reduction¿ (HPSR) available. This process is a modification to the classical electric arc furnace, which is used for the smelting of steels. In case of the different purpose of the processes, the HPSR deals with hollow carbon cathodes with a gas flow through it. Unfortunately, this technique deals with an unstable electric arc which enlarges the energy demand and has a negative impact on the refractory lining as well as overall process stability. Due to this circumstance, this work aims to investigate the influences on the electric arc stability via literature research. Another goal is to get knowledge of the effect from the gas composition, continuous ore introduction and their combined impact on electric arc stability. Due to this, all data get detected during the process. In the end, there was built up a method of evaluation in the form of two and three dimensional diagrams with the data from the previous test of electric arc stability fields by Zarl et al. [1].
