Abstract
In addition to the constant change in a company's economic environment, unpredictable crises drastically impact existing processes and workflows. With the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in December 2019, establishing a second foothold also became increasingly important in the automotive industry. Expanding one's technological know-how thus presents itself as an unintended opportunity for crisis-related reorientation. The assignment of an internationally successful automotive supplier to analyze the design of a technology transfer into an industry previously unfamiliar to the company thus serves as the basis for this master thesis. The first part focuses on explaining the theoretical and conceptual basics, which are relevant for the understanding and processing of the described topic. In addition to the definition of lateral diversification, the main focus is on the conceptual definition and the appropriate procedure of a technology and knowledge transfer. An essential component of this work lies in the explanation of strategic technology management in order to be able to derive appropriate strategies in the ensuing process. In addition to the S-curve concept, which is used to assess technology development, the formulation and design of a technology strategy play a crucial role in the further procedure. With the SWOT-, Potential- and Gap-Analysis, additional strategic tools are presented to provide a meaningful answer to the research question. In the second part of this master thesis, the reference company is presented as a practical reference point. The focus is on the classification of existing technologies, which are the basis for elaborating the core competencies. The subsequent presentation of the target industry, the product, and the primary competitors enables the formulation of the core competencies required for a technology transfer. The methods, models, and strategies previously presented in the theoretical part of this thesis are applied based on a concept development tailored to the target industry, whereby recommendations are derived concerning the further procedure in the process of choosing a technology transfer.
