Abstract

About three years ago, KNAPP made the decision to enter the frozen food storage industry. The main reason for this was to remain competitive in this industry segment. After having already developed a freezer-capable warehouse, however, a suitable load carrier was still missing. The trigger for the development project deep-freeze container, in which an optimal deep-freeze suitable container was to be developed, was given. Together with a suitable supplier and the support of the Montanuniversität Leoben, the development was started within the framework of a master thesis. To initialize the project, a market potential analysis was carried out, in which the project and the resulting product were tested for marketability and economic viability. As a second step, container tests, of containers already in use, were carried out in a real deep-freeze environment. This provided empirical data on the behavior of the container material. The findings of the container tests were used to draw up a specification document summarizing all the requirements placed on the container. With the help of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and all responsible interface products of KNAPP, a House of Quality (HoQ) was created from the requirements of the specifications. This resulted in a weighted order of the most important technical features of the container. Subsequently, the optimum container material was determined with the aid of suitable software and selection procedures. Furthermore, a comparison of common polymer processing methods was performed, and the most suitable manufacturing method was determined. After the selection of the material and the manufacturing process, a suitable supplier was evaluated in order to initialize the prototype production. The test criteria on the prototypes included a freezer test, which simulates real operation in the subsequent warehouse, and the KNAPP standard loading aid tests. After successful completion of the tests, the geometry of the freezer container was determined in consultation with all product managers. Based on these findings, the first container model was designed together with the supplier.
