Abstract
The global transport of goods is continuously increasing. This results in major problems in cities, where space is limited. Delivery cars parked in pedestrian zones and high volume of traffic leads to traffic jams and annoyed residents. This is often due to a missing overall concept for how inner-city goods transport should be organized, which leads to many individual solutions by individual players. Furthermore, all this is happening under an ever-increasing pressure for more sustainability. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to show different possibilities and concepts for inner-city general cargo transport and to point out the different challenges. Relevant stakeholders of these concepts are the communes, the carriers and the customers. It should be noted that each city offers different geographical possibilities for the implementation and a one-size-fits-all solution is not existing. For this purpose, concept building blocks from the areas of transportation, handling and handover were identified based on the literature and possible actions were brought together summarised. Based on this, various concepts were categorized and described, which can be used as a basis for concept planning for the urban transport of goods. These theoretical considerations were then complemented by exploratory expert interviews with various stakeholders to learn about their challenges, identify proposed solutions on the part of practitioners and discover their demands on other stakeholders for a successful city logistics concept. The economic aspect is clearly the most important index and the biggest challenge for the implementation and existence of city logistics concepts. The road transport still offers the highest flexibility and the greatest acceptance. A possible, widespread solution proposal for urban general cargo transport can be seen as a two-stage system with an inner-city main run on rail or road, handling in a micro depot and the very last mile via cargo bike. Parcel stations could play a key role in the handover to private customers.
