In 2011, Industry 4.0 was presented in Germany as an answer to the increasing migration of production as well as research and development to low-wage countries. Industry 4.0 is the Fourth Industrial Revolution and stands for digitization and networking of systems, processes and companies along the value-added chain. Goals include securing competitiveness and the standard of living in Europe. Austria is a country located in the center of Europe and thus faces appropriate changes. The current status including interpretation, implementation and obstacles of companies in Austria concerning Industry 4.0 is evaluated in this work. A survey and interviews with experts have been conducted in regard to this purpose. Results show that Industry 4.0 is deemed necessary in order to create future and long-term success. Due to a missing common understanding of the term the implementation of Industry 4.0 related technologies does not show great advances. A lack of qualified employees is seen as the biggest obstacle. Yet there are a few pioneers who provide maintenance solutions and deal with the education and preparation of employees considering upcoming changes. The future development of companies in Austria is determined by collaborations between companies and a structured transformation process in order to become a digital enterprise.
