Abstract

In this thesis a new mining strategy for the Open Pit Mine Mormont is conceptualized and the Quarry fleet is benchmarked. In the Mormont Mine limestone is mined, which is processed to clinker in the nearby cement plant. Commencing from a block model which was created by the company, a three dimensional detailed design of the pit is elaborated in several phases with the mine planning software Surpac. Apart from the optimization of the haul roads a number of legal constraints have to be considered. Additionally, due to safety reasons and quality and haulage aspects, the existing benches have to be cut to a maximum of 12m in height. The principal development of haulage is determined by the block model. After the detailed planning is finished, a weighted haulage distance is used to assess mining geometry and the haul distances over time. This makes a benchmarking of the fleet possible. The calculations show a very scarce margin for the existing fleet to meet the production needs within normal working hours. This however applies only if special attention is drawn to the design of haul roads - a goal not easily achievable due to the existing geometrical and legal constraints.
