Hüttenreststoffe und deren Verwendungsmöglichkeiten

Research output: ThesisMaster's Thesis

Abstract

This thesis is concerned with residues from the integrated iron and steel works of voestalpine Stahl Donawitz GmbH. At the production site Donawitz, crude steel is produced and sold directly, or it is milled to rails or wire at the same site. Many steel-production-specific residues are produced during this process, some of which are sold directly as by-products, are internally recycled, or are disposed of or recycled as waste. These residues can be classified mainly as slags, dusts, slurries and furnace linings. All of these will be discussed, first by describing the production step, where they occur, second by analysing their chemical and physical characteristics, and third by detailing the amount of production and their disposition in the year of 2017. Further, the applicable law for disposal and recycling and the possibilities for reaching the status of a by-product will be discussed. To reach the goals of the EU zero-waste-program, other ways of internal or external recycling have to be found. Therefore, experiments were conducted to recycle some of these materials in the sintering plant or in the blast furnace, in the production of concrete or cement, in use as backfill of abandoned mines, and in briquetting. Ultimately, the practice of disposal on landfills needs to be discontinued. The recent quantity development of the residues is shown as well as the planned development and efficiency of the recycling methods. Concluding, recommendations to reach a by-product-status are offered.
