Abstract

The Vöckla Beds and Atzbach Sands are members of the Ottnangian (Lower Miocene) Innviertel Group in the Upper Austrian Molasse Zone. They have been investigated using geophysical well-logs, outcrop gamma-ray logs, and seismic data. The base of the Vöckla Beds is formed by a maximum flooding surface, which is recognized in logs as well as in seismic sections (downlap surface). The log facies is characterized by a coarsening upward trend representing a regressional sequence. The coarsening upward trend is less well developed in eastern positions, where the Vöckla Beds grade laterally into the fine grained, deeper marine sediments of Robulusschlier s. str. The Atzbach Sands, a major aquifer, overlie the Vöckla Beds and the Robulusschlier s. str. and show heterogeneous bedding patterns. In a seismic line in the southern part of the study area, a north-orientated progradation within the Atzbach Sands can be observed. In more distal positions, bottom currents reworked the sands and formed numerous erosional surfaces. The upper part of the sandy facies is intercalated and overlain by the fine grained Ottnang Schlier. These deposits indicate a subsequent transgression. The topography of the erosional top of the Puchkirchen Fm causes the pinch out of the Vöckla Beds and Atzbach Sands towards north.
