Abstract
The aim of this work was to reconstruct the already known conversion of glycerol and acetone to isopropylideneglycerol (IPG) and water and to accordingly clarify the possibility of an industrial application. Up to now it were predominantly homogeneous catalysts that were used and it should therefore be determined if also a heterogeneous catalyst would be applicable. The p- toluenesulfonic acid was used as a kind of reference catalyst, because it had been mentioned in past publications. It turned out that the reaction equilibrium is strongly dependent on the stoichiometry as well as on the temperature of the reaction. More Glycerol can be converted if acetone is given in a stoichiometric surplus. Furthermore, a decreased conversion of glycerol arose as a result of an increase of the reaction temperature, i.e. the reaction is exothermic. Regarding to the reaction kinetics, a change of the reaction rate was determined after a certain yield of IPG. This is attributed to the fact that the mixture of acetone and glycerol is heterogeneous at the beginning of the reaction, and only becomes homogeneous with the rising portion of IPG in the mixture.
