Research output: ThesisMaster's Thesis

Abstract

The modern purchasing organization in an industrial company is subject to constant change. Operational activities are automated, and the increasing strategic tasks require a high level of professional competence of the responsible employees. The increasing dependency on complex value chains additionally requires the continuous adaptation of purchasing. This master thesis examines the possibilities to compare purchasing organizations on their way to excellent purchasing. One option to do this systematically, transparently and comprehensibly is the use of a maturity model. In the context of the work, the necessary preparations for the creation of an individual maturity model are presented. Based on a literature research and expert interviews, this includes the iterative development and definition in the form of workshops of eight relevant dimensions for purchasing. The dimensions elaborated are: (1) strategy, (2) organization, (3) people, (4) process, (5) suppliers, (6) innovation, (7) sustainability, and (8) key performance indicators. In cooperation with voestalpine Stahl Donawitz GmbH, the results were tested for their practical suitability. Finally, a survey was conducted among the purchasing managers of 44 purchasing organizations from the industry sector worldwide, which confirmed the selected dimensions. As a result, the present concept serves as an approach and orientation for the systematic further development of a specific, individual maturity model for purchasing.
