Abstract
Initial Situation: The paper industry is one of those industries, besides steel and cement industry, that have highest energy consumption. As there is an ongoing increase in energy costs, especially for primary fuels, the companies are always looking for opportunities to save energy and reduce emissions like CO2. For energy saving projects it is essential to know the energy consumption in diverse areas. Hitting the target: This thesis describes the development of a tool to benchmark mills and papermachines within the Mondi Group on the basis of energy consumption. A model mill was created and four well defined system levels were established. Each level was defined by objects and their energy balance was figured. For the data acquisition a special data-sheet on the basis of a paper machine and on the basis of a paper mill was created. The evaluation of this data was done by some key data which have been benchmarked. Practically implemented was this system at Mondi Business Paper Austria in Theresienthal. Both papermachines have been analysed and benchmarked. The results of this thesis showed that dispite different technologies are used for the machines, the system is working. It was possible to identify points of unreasonable high energy consumption and initiate projects that increase the energy efficiency at severe points.
