Abstract

As recent legislative changes in Germany require a separate collection and treatment of organic waste, different methods are discussed in the waste industry. Although the process of fermentation has certainly many benefits on account of its material and energy recycling, there continues to be a rise of attention in its disadvantages, one of them being the thereby produced emissions. Thereby special focus has to be laid onto the organically polluted air that is emitted from the storage of liquid digestate and the composting of solid digestate. In addition to these gaseous emissions, liquid emissions also arise in the form of process- and wastewater. In this paper particular focus has been laid upon the treatment of the by the plant in Augsburg produced emissions. It must be mentioned that the innovations of this project are further emphasized by a comparison to other plants in regards to the treatment of organic waste, which was also subject to this paper. At the considered plant in Augsburg the highly contaminated air stream which would result to nitrous oxide emissions through the biofilter due to large amounts of ammonia is used as air for the combustion process in the thermal plant. Furthermore, the wastewater, which in other plants would have to be cleaned, is injected into the combustion chamber, thereby being rendered harmless by the exhaust gas treatment before leaving the plant through the chimney. It can therefore be assumed that the innovative treatment of organic waste in the Augsburg plant is not only unique but can also clearly be set apart from the ways of treatment in other current plants which also makes it safe to conclude that this project will initiate others to follow.
