Abstract
The everlasting conflict in the automotive industry between achieving maximum strength while maintaining high formability has led to an ongoing improvement in the understanding of the precipitation sequences of age-hardenable aluminum alloys of the 6xxx and 7xxx series. In this master thesis, the influence of clustering on the age hardening and forming behavior of different aluminum alloys is investigated. In addition to a comprehensive literature review regarding clustering and general precipitation sequences in age-hardenable aluminum alloys, samples at laboratory scale of two Aluminum alloys are produced in a miniature vacuum induction furnace. In detail, these are AlMgSi(Cu) as well as modified AlMgZn(Cu) alloys. The samples are then subjected to thermomechanical treatment and, in the further course, to various heat treatment steps. The heat-treated alloys are characterized on the one hand by means of a hardness test and on the other hand by means of a tensile test regarding the achievable mechanical properties. The results of the hardness test and the tensile test show a significant increase in hardness as well as in yield strength and tensile strength in both alloy systems during and after aging. In terms of uniform elongation, Cu addition to AlMgSi alloys leads to significantly higher values. The same applies to the modified AlMg alloys. Adding Zn as well as Zn and Cu leads to a slight increase in uniform elongation.
