Abstract
This work is based on an intensive literature study on thin strip casting and the experimental simulation of it. Existing laboratory experiments and results from pilot plants are discussed. Therefrom, the subject of micro cracking has been identified as the quality-dominating item for carbon steels. Within the cooperation of the Christian Doppler Laboratory of Metallurgical Fundamentals of Continuous Casting Processes and several industrial partners, a fully automated testing apparatus could be installed at the Chair of Metallurgy, allowing a simulation of conditions similar to those of thin strip casting. The testing apparatus features numerous unique advantages which make the test a very reliable tool for analyzing the castability of different steel grades. Furthermore the testing apparatus gives the chance of studying all relevant parameters of micro cracking and evaluating their influence. A validation of the testing method showed equal results for laboratory and pilot plant specimen. The cracking sensitivity, which is frequently a problem, proved to be a result of chemical composition and casting conditions. The formation of micro cracks is attributed to the wetting properties of the casting rolls primarily, which is therefore an important starting point for optimizing the casting conditions. Future works complete the developed parameter field and make the thereof derived findings more comprehensive. Moreover the gathered results shall be transferred to a pilot plant.
