Abstract

This thesis deals with the density and pressure distribution of an emulsified explosive before detonation in an apparatus simulating a borehole. The explosive was manufactured by Westspreng Company. The chemical sensibility is being achieved by remixing a solution of Na NO2 which causes chemically gasification within the emulsion. The density of an explosive is not only a deciding factor as to whether or not it can detonate but it governs its ability to cause a detonative reaction as well. In view of the fact that it is not possible to directly measure the density of an explosive emulsion in a borehole, a test apparatus for this purpose was developed. This was constructed with pressure gauges attached to the test apparatus. The pressure, measured at the lower end of the apparatus, corresponding to the bottom of a borehole, are fed to and contained in a pressure vessel. During the entire test period the pressure recorded in ten minute intervals was introduced to this vessel. The volume of the emulsion was measured simultaneously and from the known mass at the beginning, the corresponding density was calculated. It can be seen from the results that this method of pressure measurements is not suitable for the determination of the density of an explosive substance.
