Abstract

This thesis deals with the mechanical characterization of austenitic stainless steel tubes with a corrugated surface. These special tubes are termed corrugated tubes in technical literature. The manufacturing of this kind of tubes includes a multistage cold forming process. At the beginning of the production line a metal strip has to be formed into a circular gaped profile by bending or rolling equipment. After welding the profile the plain tube is shaped to a corrugated tube by rotating or tumbling tools. Corrugated tubes are applied as flexible pipes for transportation of fossil fuels such as liquid nitrogen or mineral oil. Furthermore they are used in head exchanger or solar plants. The main tasks of this thesis were the investigation of mechanical behavior under defined loading conditions and subsequently detection of failures. For practical investigations the corrugated tubes were loaded under axial, radial and bending loads. In addition to these load cases a presser chamber was constructed in order to investigate the crack behavior of pressurized tubes. In addition to the experimental investigations the load cases were simulated with a finite-element software named Abaqus/CAE. The results of the simulation experiments were verified with the practical ones. Conclusions gained from the simulation allow failure prediction on geometric modified corrugated tubes at an early stage of development.
