Abstract

Promoting circularity and closing the loop is substantial to achieve the long-term goal of climate neutrality in the European Union (EU). This aspect is important to consider from the very beginning, in the design phase, in order to maximize the impact. Therefore, furthering Design-for-Recycling is crucial. This can be achieved by using the recyclability as an eco-modulator for disposal-tariffs. In this master thesis a practice-related model for calculating the recyclability of waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) is introduced. Existing models are evaluated and an underlying method, which – in contrast to existing models – includes all steps of the recyclability, is established. Factors influencing the recyclability of WEEE are investigated, selected and implemented into the fundamental method. The legal framework, the best available technique and Austrian WEEE recycling plants are analyzed to create a reference process for WEEE recycling in Austria. The resulting model considers all steps of the end-of-life-processes and covers the theoretical, technical and real recyclability. The promoted model aims to calculate the recyclability in a holistic, transparent, quantitative and comparative way. This is essential for applying the recyclability as a key factor for sustainable product design.
