Abstract

In cooperation with the company Tribotecc, a new test is established to evaluate and compare different metal sulphides and their Hg0 separation from crude oil. This includes topic-specific theoretical elaboration, followed by preparation for the laboratory test. To ensure clean and representative work, the model substance hexane is used instead of crude oil. The designed and constantly improved process consists of saturation, sorption, stabilization and solid/liquid separation. For Hg0 determination the direct analysis device DMA-80evo and the ICP-MS are used. The Hg0-saturation takes place at 15 °C. This ensures that no Hg0 precipitates in the sequent processes when the temperature falls below the saturation point. The metal sulfide is suspended in the Hg0-saturated hexane solution by an overhead shaker. A loss of Hg0 across the surface was observed during the experiment. This mainly takes place during the transport from sampling to analysis. For this reason, Hg0 is stabilized in the sample with a mixture of potassium bromate and bromide. This makes it possible to extract Hg0 from hexane and stabilize it in the aqueous phase. The centrifuge used for solid/liquid separation also separates Hg0 in addition to the solid phase. That is why the stabilization takes place beforehand. This ensures that the Hg0 is oxidized to Hg2+ and cannot be separated off later.
