Abstract

By Jan. Ist 2013 the amending law of the Austrian Workers Protection Act came into force. With this amendment the companies will be taken into the duty of checking their workplaces also on those psychological stresses which can lead into incorrect stresses. The legislator thereby clearly points out that the term “threats” also covers psychological strain in addition to physical loads. Over the last years the continuing development of the laws and regulations on the fields of worker’s safety-protection has led to a significant reduction of the number of workaccidents. Particularly the EU-accession of Austria and the required implementation of EU-standards into national law implied a great step forward in connection with safety and health at the Austrian workplaces. Simultaneously we can see that the world of employment has changed considerably and profoundly. The globalization of the economy – in connection with rapidly-evolving technologies - as well as the ongoing change of employment towards the service economy effect the companies and their employees. New strains and situations of stress within the workplaces have arisen and are clearly reflected in the clinical symptoms. While the number of diseases shows a consistent trend downwards, mental illnesses have significantly increased, especially since 2005. In general, the safety and health of workers and employees are a matter of national concern for the society as a whole. In practice there are various approaches and strategies for countries as well as for companies to set targeted preventive measures to support health promotion. Particularly on the operational level, a variety of independent health- and safety-management-systems can establish a basis for further improvement concerning working conditions. With the integration of psychological strains into the risk assessment of workplaces the companies in Austria enter unknown territories. There are no comparative values within the companies or specific instructions prescribed by the legislature. This thesis shows a practice-oriented way of how the risk assessment can be integrated within the context of an employee-survey and therefore will ensure the participation and involvement of the persons actually concerned.
