Abstract

A storage facitlity, or magazine, is a decisive junction of numerous logistical workflows and thus, through its key role in a variety of tasks, represents an essential aspect of all companies. Due to its complex and dynamic nature, a storage facility is always subject to improvement. Through academic research and careful consideration of all logistical processes one can achieve transparency within the magazine and hence optimize the way inventory is stored. This thesis was formed with the ambition to improve the organisation at the storage facility at Komptech GmbH in Frohnleiten in mind, along with the intention to propose and aid implement logistical solutions to optimize discrete workflows within and around the magazine. Through empirical data collection, expert consulting, and miscellaneous interviews, all strategies and magazine related processes were investigated comprehensively, the current situation was determined, and problems as well as areas with untapped potential were unearthed. This procedure lead to the creation of process optimization recommendations, which were discussed with the employees and ultimately accomplished the latter task of this thesis. Identifying the source of bottlenecks enabled the Board to prioritize their decisions regarding future investments. Based on the above, an economically advantageous, fundamental restructuring of the storage facility along with the entire administration at site was decided upon. Guided by this research, first decisions have been made and steps to successively optimize the storage facility at Frohnleiten have been implemented.
