N2 - One of the major tasks for an E&P company is to develop oil- and gas fields in order to be able to produce them. The development of a hydrocarbon field is quite a challenge as a lot of factors can influence it and a lot of different departments are involved. There is a tremendous need for proper project management methods in order to be able to fulfil this task. This thesis is composed in order to examine the project management methods at OMV E&P closer. In order to improve the project management OMV introduced new management tools and project management guidelines in 2003. Goal of this thesis is to examine if the project management methods at OMV represent best practices and to find further potential to improve the projects performance. As no projects are finished yet that use the newly implemented tools, six older projects are analysed, three of them operated by OMV and three non-operated ones were OMV is joint-venture partner, in order to find out if the problems are solved in the meantime and thereby find more potential for improvement. During this research several points are found that are regarded to have potential for improving, especially the human resources situation. Another point that needs to get better is the risk management as well as parts of the project start phase and the contracting strategy of OMV. OMVs approach is industrial standard with little space for improvement, so also alternativ methods to this approach are investigated.
