Workflow and practical aspects of a middle east oil field reservoir simulation study

Abstract
Full Field Studies are routinely conducted today to assess the value of oil and gas fields. The different disciplines involved in such a study spans from Geophysics over Geology and Petrophysics to Reservoir Engineering and Simulation. The industry offers a wide spectrum on software suits to perform in-depth analysis, do model building and full field simulation. The tools differ in their approaches to the problems, their applicability and their usability. The workflow of Full Field Studies usually has to be adapted to the quantity and quality of the available data. Raw data mainly consists of measurements done in the field like seismic, well logs, well production test and data retrieved from laboratory experiments such as core and fluid sample analyses. All this data has to be analysed, interpreted, preprocessed and finally combined in a consistent reservoir simulation model. This model is used to determine sensitivities to different reservoir parameters, for history matching if appropriate data is available and for future prediction. In this thesis the general workflow of a Full Field Study will be described on the basis of a fractured carbonate reservoir within a giant Middle East oil field. Alternative workflows especially for building the reservoir simulation model will be described. A selection of widely used petroleum software suits, their abilities and limitations will be analysed.
