Abstract

In order to assess the cost-effectiveness of the ion exchanger loop stripping, which was developed in 2012 and pilot-tested in 2017, a feasibility study is carried out. Based on the results of the pilot operation, the necessary core equipment is scaled up to obtain specific offers from equipment construction companies for the final calculation of equipment and investment costs. Operating costs are estimated based on a market research considering achievable product revenues and costs for operating supplies used in the ion exchanger loop stripping. From the results for investment and operating costs, a sensitivity analysis is performed to identify the main influencing cost factors regarding profitability. In order to assess the feasibility, various economic efficiency figures and performance indicators are calculated. Finally, the costs of the key influencing factors are varied to obtain different scenarios reflecting market changes or funding scenarios for the investment costs. In addition to the conventional product recovery system used in the ion exchanger loop stripping process (air stripping and acid washing), alternative systems like steam stripping and fractional condensation are also evaluated and assessed for their cost effectiveness.
