Abstract

The aim of this master thesis was to investigate the current state of the future project "Industrie 4.0" and to identify potential effects on metal forming. In addition, current automation solutions were evaluated for their applicability in metal forming. The practical part of the work included the construction of a model machine for metal spinning of aluminum sheets with a LEGO Mindstorms EV3 control. The effects of Industrie 4.0 on meltal forming are expected for the near future especially in the increasing networking of the production facilities, intelligent energy management and employee support in troubleshooting, maintenance and with handling tasks. The model is designed to motivate young technical trainees and demonstrate key aspects of Industrie 4.0. LEGO Mindstorms EV3 has been mounted on a standard lathe in order to control a flexible metal spinning process. Programming was done using the EV3 software based on NI LabVIEW. Two different workpieces can be produced. The control identifies the workpiece, that should be produced, by a colour code on the circular blank and loads the corresponding processing program. Instructions and information for the operator are displayed on the EV3-Brick. The spinning lathe can be controlled either via the EV3-Brick or a PC-interface and process details are wireless transmitted to a PC.
