Verwendung von Aushubmaterialien: Untersuchung des Potenzials der Molasse des Genfer Beckens für die Produktion von neuartigen Baustoffen

Research output: ThesisMaster's Thesis

Abstract

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is currently planning the construction of a new particle accelerator called the Future Circular Collider (FCC), which will extend from Switzerland to France. The massive amount of excavated tunnel material poses a major challenge. This is mainly molasse sediment from the Geneva Basin. At present, tunnel excavation material is declared as waste and must therefore be disposed of in a landfill. In order to conserve landfill space and meet the environmental requirements of the major project, a large proportion of the material must be reused. As there is currently no specific industrial use for the molasse, the aim is to find environmentally friendly and economical uses for the molasse. As part of this work, an attempt was therefore made to produce novel building materials from the processed molasse, based on geopolymers, among other things. For this purpose, test series with different mixing ratios with additives such as slag, granulated blast furnace slag and cement were produced in the laboratory. In these test series, parameters such as the uniaxial compressive strength, the slump and the shrinkage were determined and analyzed. This made it possible to determine how the added substances influence the properties of the individual test series. Furthermore, possible areas of application for the building materials produced were determined.
