Abstract
Wood ash is a residue resulting from the combustion of biomass for power and heat production, which has to be disposed of or recycled. Therefore, the utilization as a raw material in the production of cement is an option, where the material is grinded together with other raw ingredients in the raw mill and afterwards burnt to clinker in the rotary kiln. Due to the variable physical properties of wood ash, problems in the handling can occur. For example, dry ash tends to dust formation, whereas coarse ash particles of wet ash can lead to difficulties in transport, loading processes and delivery at the cement plant. Furthermore, contaminants and the high pH value of the material are disturbing. As a target of this work, optimization potential of the wood ash quality should be found, considering several wood ash production plants and storage facilities, as well as the local conditions in an Austrian cement plant. Thus, dry wood ash can be filled into silos after separating impurities. Also, it can be wetted or mixed with wet ash to utilize both ash types together. Wet ash has to be crushed or sieved to meet the required particle size to be accepted in the cement plant. The granulation of the material is evaluated as well. For the implementation of the developed improvement strategies it has to be considered that different handling options and mechanical treatment are increasing costs and effort and require a suitable site for the processing. Moreover, the varying wood ash characteristics complicate a quality assured utilization. Thus, the proposed strategies have to be tested under practical circumstances before implementation to proof the functionality and estimate the real costs to be expected.
