Abstract

The number of applications for plastic parts with micro-structured surfaces is increasing. Most of these parts are produced by injection moulding. To evaluate various influences on the reproduction of a structured cavity surface on the injection moulding part, a multifunctional injection mould was built. To evaluate the influence of the injection moulding process parameters various geometrically defined microstructures were reproduced in amorphous polycarbonate (PC) and semi-crystalline polypropylene (PP) under variation of the holding pressure, the injection rate, the melt and the mould temperature. By measuring the topography of the mould and the moulded part with a non-contact 3D optical topography measuring instrument, a reproduction ratio can be defined. The main aim of these tests was to identify the injection moulding process parameters with the greatest influence on surface structure reproduction. For PC the holding pressure, the mould temperature and the injection rate were determined as the main influences on surface reproduction. For the reproduction of micro-structured surfaces on PP the holding pressure and the melt temperature have the greatest influence. The different behaviour is the result of the different solidification of the two types of polymers. With these results and the results of filling studies a model for the reproduction of micro-structures on a simple plain plate could be developed.
