Abstract
Stiffness and toughness are usually competitive properties of materials. To overcome this situation where the increase in one property immediately leads to a decrease of the other, intelligent design criteria can be useful. It is possible to use blueprints of the composite architecture of certain biological structures in order to increase toughness, while preserving the necessary stiffness.
