Abstract

Objective of the master thesis was the development of a strategy for a SME in the line of steel construction and portal system construction. The company’s history, the structure of the organization, as well as the product range and the operating areas of the company is the starting position of the thesis. The aims are derived by identification of problem fields in the company and although the motivation for this work. The second part of the thesis is built by the theoretical basics of strategy development. The definition of strategy, the history of strategy and strategic management are discussed. A classification of normative, strategic and operative management follows. Afterwards the process of strategic planning is discussed. In the next chapter the philosophy and structured model of the strategic management is explained and a potential implementation of an integrated management system in the company is reported. The process of strategic planning operates mainly in the fields of target planning, analysis of the external environment and the internal analyse of the company, as well as the strategic prognoses and the early recognition. The main principles of strategy building and an overview of market based portfolio theories, follows by the introduction of the McKinsey & Company portfolio, as well as the classical product / market matrix by Ansoff are the main part of the strategy development. The theoretical part is finished by the strategy implementation and the introduction of the balanced scorecard, as connecting element of the strategic planning and the performance of the implementation. The practical use for the development of the strategy for the company is the third part of the paper. The starting point and the client analysis have already been discussed in the first chapter. From the idealised process of strategy planning and the SWOT analyses as well as the processing of the SWOT analysis follows the analyses of the business units of the McKinsey portfolio and with the help of the balanced scorecard we calculate goals and operating figures and a list of arrangements. The list of arrangements is the end of the thesis, which can be seen as a first loop of the strategic planning process of the company. The data analysis is the most important part of all SME´s because the practical use of the portfolio analysis as an example, turn the results in certain direction which is more than doubtful. Due to the small amount of clients an analysis of the biggest clients is advisable. Because of this way over the quality aspect ranging customer survey the expectations of the customers of the company products and services will be analysed in detail to integrate another loop of the process of strategy planning into the analyses. There are new challenges for entrepreneurs every day. This challenges, in order to survive the competition, are to be performed as fast as possible and as sustainable as possible focussing on resources. Flexibility offers on one side huge opportunities on market and client side, on the other hand exactly this flexible reaction on market and client requirements asks for an enormous amount of time. Especially in SME the daily business of the operating management takes a lot of time. In order to obtain and increase the flexibility, which is a main factor of competition, the management is requested to build necessary conditions as well normative, strategic and operative.
