Abstract
Retaining rings are an assembly of electric generators and find their application in supporting the copper coils against centrifugal forces. Even though the high rotational speed and the involved centrifugal forces would favor materials with high weight specific properties, metallic alloys are in use so far. These materials exhibit comparatively lower specific properties and cause a higher self loading of the retaining ring, which increases linearly with increasing size of the retaining ring. Hereby a diameter of 1092 mm is the critical level, and a realization of bigger dimensions is just possible by using materials with higher weight specific properties, such as fiber reinforced materials. The aim of the current work was to explore the applicability of fiber reinforced materials in a retaining ring application for turbo generators based on literature researches in corporation with Andritz Hydro AG (Weiz, A). Considering, defined in the technical specification, mechanical and physical requirements for the retaining ring, a widespread literature research was performed. Including the findings from the literature as well as first calculations concerning dimensioning a principal applicability of fiber reinforced epoxy resins for the existing application was found.
